Umrah Rules: Fard, Wajib and Prohibitions
In the Hanafi school, ihram and most of tawaf are the essential parts (fard) of Umrah, while sa'i and shaving or shortening the hair are wajib; other schools count sa'i as essential too. In ihram, perfume, cutting hair or nails, marital relations and hunting are forbidden; men may not wear stitched clothes or cover the head.

Pillars and obligations
| Act | Hanafi school | Other schools (majority) |

| Sa'i | Wajib | Pillar |
| Shaving or shortening | Wajib | Pillar (Shafi'i) or wajib |
Missing a wajib act usually requires a sacrifice (dam); missing a pillar means the Umrah is not complete until it is done.

Frequently asked questions
What breaks ihram during Umrah?
Nothing "breaks" ihram except completing the Umrah. Doing a forbidden act while in ihram usually requires a fidyah (charity, fasting or a sacrifice depending on the act); marital relations before completing Umrah invalidate it.
Can I use unscented soap in ihram?
Yes. Only scented products are forbidden.
