Umrah Rules: Fard, Wajib and Prohibitions

In the Hanafi school, ihram and most of tawaf are the essential parts (fard) of Umrah, while sa'i and shaving or shortening the hair are wajib; other schools count sa'i as essential too. In ihram, perfume, cutting hair or nails, marital relations and hunting are forbidden; men may not wear stitched clothes or cover the head.

Missing a wajib act usually requires a sacrifice (dam); missing a pillar means the Umrah is not complete until it is done.

  • Perfume on body or clothes, including scented soap
  • Cutting or removing hair and nails

Saudi rules to know in 2026

  • The Umrah visa is tied to a hotel and transport booking on Nusuk.
  • Praying in the Rawdah in Madinah needs a time slot booked in the Nusuk app.
  • Umrah visas usually pause from about mid-Shawwal until after Hajj.

Frequently asked questions

What breaks ihram during Umrah?

Nothing "breaks" ihram except completing the Umrah. Doing a forbidden act while in ihram usually requires a fidyah (charity, fasting or a sacrifice depending on the act); marital relations before completing Umrah invalidate it.

Can I use unscented soap in ihram?

Yes. Only scented products are forbidden.
