Choose your Umrah hotel by walking distance to the Haram before star rating. Within about 300 m you can walk to every prayer; 600 m to 1.5 km is a 10 to 20 minute walk each way; further out you depend on a shuttle. Distance is also the biggest single driver of a package's price.

Most hotels are in the central area around Masjid an-Nabawi, so even budget hotels are often within a 10-minute walk. Women should check the walk to the women's gates.

- Whether the hotel booking is registered on Nusuk (it must be, for the visa)
